Mold can be dangerous to your possessions and your health. The sooner you detect it, the sooner you can have it professionally removed. Not all mold is immediately obvious. It’s important to be able to tell when mold is lurking.

Signs That You Have Mold in Your Home

Sometimes mold is obvious, but other times it hides and grows hidden in your home. You may have mold in your home if any of the following is true:

  • You can see the characteristic black, gray or orange splotches caused by mold.
  • A wet area is forming on a ceiling or wall. This is a sign of a water incursion into the home, which is quite often followed by mold.
  • You can smell a musty odor in your home.
  • You are experiencing allergic symptoms such as an itchy nose, watery eyes, sneezing or coughing.
  • There are damp and enclosed areas in your home, such as an unvented attic, a closet or a cabinet under a leaky kitchen sink

.
Mold can hide in a number of areas in your home. Lift mattresses and pull furniture from the walls to see if there is mold hiding behind them. Check inside closets, attics and basements.

If you can smell mold but do not see where the source of the scent is, you may have mold under your floors, behind the drywall of your walls, under cabinets or above your ceiling tiles.

If you do smell mold, simply airing the area out is not likely to remediate the mold problem. Mold spores are very tough and will simply wait until the conditions are right again for them to grow.

If you are worried that you have toxic black mold in your home, there are a number of inexpensive tests available. These can tell you whether the mold you have is the extremely dangerous Stachubotrys or one of the other kinds that can be found inside your home.

Even mold that is not toxic black mold can be dangerous. It can cause allergic symptoms in people who are susceptible to it. It can also cause staining and other damage to your home and your possessions.
If you find mold in your home, professional remediation can help assure that it does not reappear. To keep mold from coming back, mold spores must be removed and the area modified so that it is no longer an attractive habitat.
